Retrofit to Net Zero

Modified on Fri, 15 Nov at 11:28 AM

The winning entry in the 2023 IBPSA student modelling competition showcased impressive energy efficiency improvements to an existing building:

  • EUI reduced from 213 to 70 kWh/m²/year
  • HVAC upgrade: VAV system replaced with VRF + DOAS, cutting EUI by 40%
  • Enhanced lighting control and daylighting optimisation
  • 1515 kWp solar PV installation

The winning team used DesignBuilder to show that these integrated passive and active strategies achieved net-zero carbon emissions, while maintaining occupant comfort. Surplus electricity from on-site solar panels is exported to the grid to offset the building's remaining imported grid electricity through net-metering arrangements. This demonstrates how comprehensive retrofits can enhance energy efficiency and potentially achieve net-zero carbon status in existing buildings.
